Ahhhh.... Common Core Standards!!!!!

AHHHH... COMMON CORE! NOOOO...      PARENTS: This post is mostly for you....please, read carefully.     If you are a teacher, there's a very high chance you've heard this from a parent before. If you are a parent of a school-aged child, you've likely thought or even said this to a teacher before.     To start a discussion about the Common Core Standards (CCS), I need to start with how and why it started because when the push comes to shove, they really aren't that scary.      IT'S THE TESTING that's scary.     Many of you remember George H. W. Bush. During his presidency, No Child Left Behind was signed. This federal act introduced the idea that every school must implement standardized tests annually in grades 3-8 to analyze the downfalls and adjust accordingly. Students had to achieve "proficient" scores or the school would suffer consequences. (Sounds dumb right?...well...it is). The Bush Administration pushed for te...

Crazy Kiddo Stories

 Crazy Kiddo Stories

All names have been changed for protection.

1st Year Teaching (2010) - I was giving a normal 1st grade assessment at the beginning of the year. Uppercase and lowercase letters and the first 25 words on the Dolch Sight Word list. One girl, Sally, comes up for her turn. She knows maybe 5 letters in total.

Me: Sally, now I want you to read some words for me.

    Sally: What are words?

Me: *blinked several times, holding in the laughter* Um. *points to the words* These are words. When you put the letters together in a certain order, they make words.

Sally: *Looks at me like I'm speaking a different language* I don't get it.

Me: *smiles* Did you not learn these in Kindergarten...nevermind...you'll learn these words this year. You can go back to your seat.

On a happy note, Sally did learn how to read words by the end of the year.

2014 - Kindergarten - I have been teaching at the same school for about four years now. So I have taught many, if not all, of the students that were in the higher grades. One day, a former student brought me a cupcake to celebrate her birthday. It was at the end of the day and my students were having some quiet time, watching Magic School Bus, before dismissal.

Me: *goes to take a bite of the cupcake*

Bobby: *staring at me* Can I have that cupcake?

Me: *pausing mid-bite* No. This is my cupcake.

Bobby: Yeah, I know. But when can I have a bite?

Me: *giving him a very confused look* I can't share it with you. We aren't family. And we only share food with family.

Bobby: But, I'm hungry and I want that cupcake.

All the other students: *looks at Bobby with strange confusion not understanding why he doesn't get it*

Me: Sorry, Bobby, no. This is my cupcake. When you get home you can have some of your own food.
